Great Dog Training Advice
What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #121

when is the right time to end the life of your dog?

This is each of our own personal journey and there is no correct answer to this, but I can share my experience with my dogs.

This morning one of our family dogs was put to rest. Djeki came into our lives a few years ago and was almost 10years old. For the last few years he has been struggling with his back legs and had a considerable tumor on his tail that could not be removed, he was not able to hold his bladder overnight and started having the same issues with his bowels. He started getting much worse in the last month and was on pain killers daily for the last 6 months. He has been spending over 23 hours a day just laying down as moving around was hard. Once we opened up our swimming pool at home, i knew that would excite him and it did up until yesterday as he was running around with the other dogs. Yesterday he had a hard time standing, last night it was worse and this morning even worse.
So as a family we made the decision to go to the vet today.

As we walked into the vet he was having a hard time walking and I knew I was making the right decision.

This is the thing, for me I was not going to wait until he could not even move and every step was a challenge or had to be carried, I was not going to wait until he soiled himself because he could not move around.

I have seen so many folks wait to long, they wait to long for human reasons (none of us want to lose our dogs) but if you talk to enough vets, if you talk to enough people who have had a lot of dogs come and go, one thing they will tell you is that most folks wait too long. Unfortuntaly the dog suffers the most even though we are suffering as well.

I think we keep our dying dogs alive more for us than for the dog (no judgement) but if you are not sure what to do, if you have not had to make that decision before, maybe this will help.
